WINTER OLYMPICS

Luge

The very first thing I would do regarding this Olympic First Day Cover is to urge you to consider the color coordination that binds this hand-painted COLLINS together. Building on the burnt orange tones of the stamp, I expand the cachet in this direction choosing complementary watercolors to make the most of an eye-catching opportunity.

The second thing for you to look for is how I create the illusion of speed as the athlete hurtles down the icy track at break-neck speeds. By taking artistic license, I merge the appearance of speed and the use of dynamic paints to dramatize the snow and ice sprayed into the air from the luge's runners.

A luge is a very small and light-weight sled on which the competitor lies back in a prone position. The body is only inches above the ice as the luge flies down the track to the finish line. It takes a great deal of personal courage to participate in this exciting event.

My cachet extends across the entire face of the envelope. From the helmeted head to the pointed toes, the entire athlete and his luge are realistically portrayed as he "slides" down the course. The dominant use of several orange and tangerine colors with blues, reds, lavendars, and pinks added make this a superb addition to your collection, and I cannot stress enough how this FDC has achieved a very distinctive and bold look that only careful individual hand painting can produce.

In fact, not only this flashy Olympic cover but also the beautiful "Dove and Roses Love" and appealing "Year of the Dog" COLLINS FDCs that are being offered at this time are all excellent examples of the cachetmakers art form, and I am proud to have produced them. This is the quality that I strive for to enhance your collection and my reputation. They are covers that you will enjoy owning and that will always be highly collectible within the hobby.

Enjoy the birds-eye view of the speeding luge. Pure concentration on the face. Perfect body position. Toes pointed inward. The pursuit of speed down the frozen Olympic track. Luge. Item #L2202. $10.75.
