Dr. Theodore von Karman

 Aerospace Engineer

Collins Cover Announcement

DR. THEODORE VON KARMAN

In 1963 the very first National Medal of Science was presented to Dr. von Karman by President Kennedy. He is credited with establishing a rocket research center which has now become the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. Many of the principles of aerodynamics that were instrumental in the development of the U.S. Space Program and the landing of Apollo II on the moon were pioneered by Dr. von Karman. His career was spent as scientist, engineer, and professor and he made tremendous contributions to the aviation and aerospace industry of the United States.

My hand-painted cachet is a colorful and dynamic one. It pictures Dr. von Karman amid a variety of rockets that are blasting off. It really is a very dramatic cachet and since the

"space" topical is so popular, I think that this COLLINS will become a hobby favorite.

The stamp was issued in Washington, D.C., but I wanted to get a First Day postmark that would more specifically honor Dr. von Karman for his achievements. Since the feat of landing on the moon was achieved in large measure due to his many contributions, I decided the "Landing," New Jersey would be my postal salute to this amazing aerospace scientist. The cancel is a philatelic beauty and nicely related to the issue -- something only achieved and offered by COLLINS. A great "space" First Day Cover. Item #R2001. $10.75.
