YOUTH CLASSICS

REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is the story of a fatherless girl who goes to live with her maiden aunts. It was the most popular work of author Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin. In this cheery and up-lifting hand-painted cachet, I picture a pert Rebecca dressed in pretty pink with a matching parasol. A straw hat and woven picnic basket attest to her embarking on a summer day's outing. She has strolled down the garden path and is just exiting the grounds through a picket fence gate. Multi-colored flowers bloom on high stems and a pair of bluebirds add to the light-hearted moment. The scene takes place under blue skies and quaint cottages and green shrubbery provide a splendid setting for Rebecca's new home.

The book was an immediate best seller in 1903 and was made into a play in 1910. It enjoyed a long run in the United States and Europe. Mary Pickford starred in the title role in a 1917 motion picture and a later 1938 movie featured Shirley Temple.

A First Day of Issue bullseye postmark from Louisville, Kentucky ties the new stamp to the cover. The hand-painted cachet captures the exhuberance of youth and will give you a good feeling just looking at it. A pretty girl in pink amidst garden flowers and bluebirds. A beloved youth Classic. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. Item #F2201. $10.75.
