Definitive Issue
Statue of Liberty
Collins Cover Announcement
STATUE OF LIBERTY
The First Day of Issue cancellation on this COLLINS Cover is a main feature. It is a "pictorial" showing Liberty's torch encircled by a border proclaiming American First Day Cover Society. The reason for such a "custom" postmark is that it was only available to those there in person at the site of the First Day Cover Society Convention. In addition to being a pictorial cancel, it is also a "slogan" postmark which states:
Thirty-ninth AFDCS Convention
Americover 94
Stamp and Cover Fest
Haines City, Florida
This special postmark which will be a fairly scarce philatelic variety for this issue, ties the brightly colored stamp to the
cover.
Because the cancel is "busy", I opted for a fairly simple but effective Statue of Liberty cachet design. You are looking up at the head, crown, and torch with the torch painted in a flame effect. Beyond is a blue sky and cloud background. For the text I chose a nice script typestyle.
This was a fun cover to service. My daughters Becky and Christy were with me at the Convention (you may remember them from the photo I sent last year picturing them and Monte Eiserman holding my three cachetmaker contest trophies) and we enjoyed the morning together "licking and sticking." We then went to the U.S. Postal Station on the Convention floor where the special postmark was hand-stamped on each cover. During this time we met several COLLINS collectors and had some nice chats. Youth Committee Chairman Earl Lowenstein from Arizona gave Christy a wonderful philatelic tour (and some cover goodies) and I think it was an awakening for her in regard to the scope of the hobby. She was very enthusiastic.
This cover is not very complex or detailed. It is easy to look at and I think it will present a nice change of pace for your COLLINS collection. It certainly will always be special to me as it evokes memories of a wonderful convention weekend with two of my daughters and many, many "cover friends" .whom I have met over the years. An AFDCS special. Statue of Liberty. Item No. A2301. $10.75.
