Theodor Seuss Geisel

Dr. Seuss - Children’s Book Writer and Book Characters

Cat in the Hat

Collins Cover Announcement

Doctor Seuss

There is such a wealth of interesting and entertaining material from the Dr. Seuss books that I wound up doing two cachets to honor this famous children's author.

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. The new stamp had its First Day of Issue exactly one hundred years after that date. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925 and then studied at Oxford University in England. He returned to Springfield to begin a career as an artist and writer.

In 1936, after a successful career in advertising, Dr. Seuss (his adopted pen name) wrote the first of his 44 books for children. His works typically feature a story in verse illustrated with humorous creatures that stretch a child's imagination. His books often teach a lesson about virtues, but it is low-key and cleverly integrated into the storyline.

Many consider The Cat in the Hat his most innovative book. It is now accepted as one of the most influential pieces of literature for beginning readers ever written. Geisel once said, "Children want the same things we want — to laugh, to be challenged, and to be entertained."

My cover with the stamp in the upper right hand corner features a design based on his holiday favorite How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The second cover, with the stamp in the lower right hand corner, pays tribute to the delightful Horton Hears a Who; to his first book And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street; and to his crowning achievement The Cat in the Hat.

It is with pleasure that I now offer these two cachets that honored the renowned children's author who, through his work, continues to entertain and challenge children and continues to make them laugh. Theodor Seuss Geisel. The immortal Dr. Seuss. The Cat in the Hat design E3801 and How the Grinch Stole Christmas design E3802 — $12.25 each.
