Elk,- `Yuktide Bugle"

On this year's hand painted Christmas wildlife cachet, I've featured the majestic elk. This beautiful animal is especially active at dawn and dusk and can move through the forest swiftly and silently. The elk is a grazer feeding on grasses and woody vegetation. The "bugle" of a bull begins as a bellow and then changes to a loud whistle. With its large rack of antlers and dark brown mane, the male elk is a wonderful subject for a Christmas

Last year, a new Collins collector inquired as to what connection wildlife has to Christmas. I answered that I had always done Christmas covers, but in 1988 I decided to do a cover bearing both the traditional and religious Christmas stamps on one envelope. Rather than produce another typical Christmas design, I decided to do something that no other cachetmaker offered. Each year I would feature a different species done in a winter setting to capture a seasonal flavor. My woodduck "On Winter Pond" was an instant hit with many collectors, and now each year's edition is eagerly anticipated. The remaining covers in stock are in limited numbers so, if you are missing any or if you are a new collector, you might want to fill in now.
