Children’s Book Animals

Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss

Collins Cover Announcement

Favorite Children's Book Animals

Fox in Socks

After much careful thought and consideration, I have decided to make lovable real animals my cachet subjects for this wonderful series. By doing this, I feel I can provide a winning combination of the whimsical unique characters on the stamps and the actual animals that inspired their creation. Also, I believe that most (or all) other cachetmakers will opt to produce cartoonish cachets which will make the real-life, hand painted Collins renditions stand out that much more by comparison.

For the first one, I chose the stamp with the Dr. Seuss character — Fox in Socks. His work is always eagerly sought by collectors, so this First Day of Issue will be a great way for you to begin assembling this charming series of eight covers. The stamp depicts the Fox in Socks doing a handstand, and it is

tied to the envelope with a terrific pictorial First Day postmark.

My hand painted cachet features a fleet red fox, with black legs that resemble socks, bounding through a grassy, flowered meadow. The free and flowing sense of motion perfectly complements the unusual design of the Dr. Seuss fox on the stamp.

When I finally sat down with the finished watercolored cover, it was with a deep feeling of satisfaction. The concept of combining real animals with their counterpart children's book characters has resulted in a series of fine collecbtibles. I'm excited to offer the first — Fox in Socks — Collins #04003

— $13.25.
