A Day in America

Afternoon/Middle Age - Volunteerism

As this mini-set evolves, I feel good about how it is coming together. Just as the sun crosses the sky from dawn to dusk, the four new stamps with their First Day postmarks are making their way across the top of my envelopes. This one is on the right-hand side, and the final stamp next time (evening) will be in the right corner.

The individually hand painted cachet pays tribute to those volunteers across our nation who man the community fire departments and staff the local ambulance corps. Featured are a fireman and an emergency medical technician. America has a proud tradition of citizens devoting their time to protecting the welfare and safety of their neighbors. At present, much time is required for mandatory training and preparation as well as the actual hours spent on duty and being on call. In this scene, the watercolors used have resulted in a very realistic portrayal of

two representatives of all those who serve.

This cover joins the first two Flag stamps (morning and noon) for which I did a scouting cachet representing youth and a Coast Guard military cachet representing adulthood. Next time I will conclude the set with the flag at evening time. My final dachet for this Americana series will feature senior citizens in the roles of historical reenactors around a fire at a Revolutionary War encampment. This is turning out to be a very special set of Collins covers, and at this time, I'm pleased to offer the next chapter in "A Day in America." Middle-aged community volunteers. The flag in the afternoon. Collins #J4403 —$13.25.
