American Journalists
Eric Sevareid
Arnold Eric Sevareid was born in Velma, North Dakota on November 26, 1912. At 17 and a recent high school graduate, he showed his adventurous spirit as he and a friend embarked on a 2,250 mile canoe trip through the Canadian wilds from Minnesota north to Hudson Bay. In 1935 he graduated from the University of Minnesota.
Entering the field of journalism, his first jobs were with the Minneapolis Journal and the Paris Herald Tribune newspapers. From 1939 to 1977 he was a distinguished CBS News journalist. Eric was one of a group of elite war correspondents called "Murrow's Boys" because they were hired by pioneering CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow.
During World War II, Sevareid broadcast the fall of Paris to the Germans. My hand painted cachet shows the legendary newsman as he covers the German invasion of Paris. Nearby are three of Hitler's troops and behind them the Arc de Triomphe. This cover fits nicely into not only Collins collections but those of military toicalists as well.
Throughout his career from newspaper to radio to television, he combined a personal zeal with objective professional. He could report the news with the best of them but also relished offering editorial comment. His passion to his chosen career was evident in his last appearance in 1977 on the "CBS- Evening News. " As he bade farewell and retired, tears of emotion rolled down his cheeks. American journalist Eric Sevareid — Collins #K4405. $13.25.
