This set came tog-effer nicely as the new stamps and my and painted eàchets show Lincoln at different times in his life. Although popular locally, Abe was not well know nationally until he ran against Stephen A. Douglas for the United States Senate. During the campaign in 1858, he debated Douglas a number of times, and his stellar performances gained him a great deal of positive national exposure. His political career took off which resulted a few years later in the presidency.
