79¢ Airmail Issue - Jaguar Cachet
A sighting in the United States is now extremely rare and is confined to the southern parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. However, several centuries ago the jaguar ranged as far north as Zion National Park and as far east as Missouri. Since I wanted my collectors to have this largest of North American big cats represented in their Collins collection, I decided to set this cachet in the time period around 1500.
The awesome cat strikes an imposing image in the foreground of this individually watercolored cachet. The tawny color of the coat is beautifully marked with black rosettes. It's a truly magnificent creature. In the background are the distinct reddish rock formations of Zion National Park which is located in southern Utah. The combination of the light golden jaguar and the striking red ledges is wonderful with the greens of the scrubbrush providing a colorful buffer. It is in this arid mountainous scrub that the roar of the jaguar (the only North American cat to do so) once echoed off the picturesque cliffs of Zion National Park.
This is the companion piece to the recently offered Grand Teton cover. As with that one, my hand painted cachet wraps around the slogan first day of issue postmark. Not only will future Collins and wildlife collectors be searching out this cover — but air mail enthusiasts as well. Don't miss it!
My Zion National Pak First Day Cover, featuring the largest and most powerful of North American cats — the magnificent jaguar, is now available, and it's a candidate for an early sell-out. Collins #T4601 —$15.00.
