ROY ROGERS
One of America's favorite cowboys, Roy Rogers was a famous Western actor and singer. Along with his wife Dale Evans, his horse Trigger, and his German shepherd Bullet, he starred in over 100 movies and his television show which ran from 1951 to 1957. He was born on November 5, 1911 in Cincinnati, Ohio as Leonard Franklin Slye. In 1930 he moved with his family to California in search of employment and, due to the harsh economic climate, took a series of construction and factory jobs. Len, a good singer and guitarist, decided to pursue a music career and was successful. He soon was touring with the "O-Bar-0 Cowboys" on radio stations and live performances. In 1934 he formed his own group — "Sons of the Pioneers." Two big hits, "Cool Water" and "Tumbling-Tumbleweeds" followed. Starting in 1935,_Len, made appearances irmany Western movies include, ding a large supporting role in a Gene Autry film. In 1938 he took the stage name of Roy Rogers and won the lead role in the movie "Under Western Stars. " He immediately became a matinee idol, film star, and American legend. And from then on, he would compete with Gene Autry to be the nation's favorite singing cowboy.
In 1942 he legally changed his name to Roy Rogers, and on New Year's Eve in 1947 he married Dale Evans. Their famous sign-off song on the television show was "Happy Trails" and Roy's uplifting performances and strong personal character certainly brought happy trails of enjoyment to America's youth and the young at heart.
