Boy Scouts of America - Centennial

Truth * Knowledge * Be Prepared

Cover Announcement

Federal Hill in Bloomingdale. New Jersey served as a lookout point for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. It was also the site of the "scout cabin" in the 1930s that I often heard my Dad talk about. One of the most sentimentally precious items I have is his log of meeting minutes that he recorded during those long-ago scout gatherings on Federal Hill. On page 108 of my book (published in 1999), I've inclucied a photo of his wide-brimmed hat from that period of his life.

Growing up in rural West Milford. New Jersey in the 1950s did not include a lot of youth activities. The local 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts were what we had, and both were top-notch organizations. I was in Troop 44 (again see page 108) for three years, and then I was one of six charter members that founded Erplorer Post 44 for boys over 14 years old. As it was before me with Dad, scouting was a fun activity for me that taught self-reliance and fostered a love of the outdoors.

For this new issue, I decided to do a lakeside campsite. It really turned out great and portrays what many people rightfully envision as part of the scouting experience. The campfire is being attended to as another scout approaches in a canoe. To the right I've included an American bald eagle within an oval frame as a salute to all those who have obtained that high ranking.

Each cachet is individually hand painted, and I must say the completed cover is really a perfect image to honor the Boy Scouts. For a change of pace, I've positioned the stamp and its First Day postmark to the upper left. I'm pleased to offer this cover celebrating 100 years of scouting, and I dedicate it to the memory of Dad and his troop and their long-ago boyrhood adventures on Federal Hill. Collins #X4701 $14.00.
