American Scientists
Maria Goeppert Mayer -- Physicist
Collins Cover Announcement
American Scientists
Maria Goeppert Mayer — Physicist
This is the fourth and final Collins cachet for this very colorful set of American Scientist stamps. Since science is not among those topics that most collectors favor, I knew my challenge was to make my individually hand painted cachets the unmistaken stand-outs of all those produced. The honorees, of course, were all deserving academics so I knew that I needed to go beyond their scholarly attributes. No one can argue that the colors of the stamps are very appealing, especially when viewed together on the mint sheets of twenty. Looking to build on this positive, I decided to coordinate the watercolor shades in my cachets with the colors of the individual stamps. That worked very well.
Three other design elements were used to make this set something special. First, each of the four stamps was placed in a different corner of the envelope. This gives the covers a refreshingly different look. Second, the "American Scientists'Iset title-is-displayed in bold block-letters, and-all of the individual letters are hand painted _ to complement the coloring in the stamp. Third, a watercolored vignette relating to the scientist shown also appears on each stamp.
Maria Goeppert Mayer was a senior physicist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago during the 1940s where she developed a mathematical model for the structure of nuclear shells. She received the 1963 Nobel Prize for this work. She finished her esteemed career as Professor of Physics at the University of California.
The above offers insight into my overall thought process as a cachetmaker. I strive to make all of my cachets stand above others being produced so that my collectors will continue to have the finest. Maria Goeppert Mayer is now ready. Collins #C4903 at $14.00.
