Flax

This blue-flowered herb is among the earliest of plants for which man found a use other than food. Spun fibers have been found by archeologists in the campsites of prehistoric lake dwellers in Switzerland dating back about ten thousand years. Egyptians used flax to make linen, and the cloth was used for their religious garments as it was for the early Hebrews and Greeks.

The versatile herb became veryimportant in Europe where_aside from linens, it was used in medicines, baked goods, and the making of linseed oil. The latter was used in the making of oilcloth, paints, and linoleum.

My individually hand painted cachet shows a country home in the Irish countryside where a colleen is hanging out the linens to dry. It's a lovely scene, and to the right are products made from this very important plant. Now ready is my First Day Cover for the next herb in the mini-set of five. From a place of beauty along the coast of the Emerald Isle, I'm pleased to offer the Flax First Day Cover.  Collins #N4802 at $14.00.
