Walrus – Alaska in Winter
Collins Cover Announcement
All Seasons
Marine Mammals Set of Four
Walrus
Now available is the second cover in this mini-series, and the feedback has been great. Collins collectors loved the single-tusked narwhal whale. It certainly is an unusual creature. The long tusked bull walrus is individually hand painted, and for wildlife enthusiasts, the cachet is really a gem. During the wanner months, the distinctive marine mammal lives in the Chukchi Sea and then in autumn and winter travels to the Bering-Sea.
The walrus on this "All Seasons" cover is shown as he winters in Alaska. A male such as this one can be twelve feet long and weigh as much as 3000 pounds. The tusks can grow to more than 3 feet long and weigh over 15 pounds each. The tusks are used to dig in the ocean bottom for clams — the massive mammal's main food source.
Until recently, the walrus provided Eskimos with meat. Their blubber was used for waterproofing and their oil for light. The thick skin covered kayaks and igloos, and the ivory tusks were carved into tools, weapons, and ornaments. I'm pleased to present the awesome Alaskan walrus. Collins #C5204 at $14.00.
