This hand painted cover completes my 2013 Civil War covers. Johnston was a career U.S. Army officer who served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. He was a high-level Confederate general throughout the Civil War and was the senior commander at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861. He defended Richmond during 1862 and later commanded the western units for the South. After the war, Union Generals Grant and Sherman made highly respectful comments regarding his service to the Confederacy and, in-fact-Johnston became close life-long friends with his former foes.
