PEARL BUCK: Pearl was born on June 26, 1892 in Hillsboro, WV to Presbyterian missionaries. When she was three months old, it was off to China with her parents. In 1911 she returned to the United States to attend college. In 1914 she returned to China and in 1917 married John Buck. Her first novels were "East Wind: West Wind" and "The Good Earth. "
BOOKER T. WASHINGTON: Booker spent his boyhood in West Virginia after his family moved there shortly after his parents were emancipated. He became a gifted orator and was an advisor to several presidents. Washington advocated. putting _reliance _in the black community on long-term educational and economic advancement. His Atlanta Compromise called for avoiding damaging confrontation regarding racial tensions. At the turn of the century, he led a nationwide coalition of middle-class blacks, church leaders, and white politicians and philanthropists.
CHUCK 'YEAGER: Chuck was born on February 13, 1923 in Myra, West Virginia. Yeager's aviation career began in World War II as an aircraft mechanic. In 1942 he entered pilot training school and became a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot. After the war he became a test pilot and on October 14, 1947 became the first human to break the sound barrier while flying the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft. Chuck Yeager's flying career spanned 60 years, and he was prominently featured in the book and film entitled "The Right Stuff. "
