Folk Art Eagle

Washington Crosses the Delaware

On Christmas day 1776, General George Washington assembled his troops at McKonkey's Tavern on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River. His plan was to cross the American forces and to march south to Trenton to attack the British and Hessian garrison. Freezing cold weather and icy sleet delayed the crossing, and all of his men did not reach the Jersey side until 3 a.m. — hours behind schedule. At 4 a.m., the 2,400 man Army marched south to Trenton.

At 8 a.m., the enemy position was attacked by three columns led by Washington. Sullivan. and Greene. After artillery battles and hand to hand fighting, the Hessians surrendered and the Americans had secured a much needed victory.

My individually hand painted cachet shows Washington and some of his men on Christmas night as they began their crossing of the Delaware. This is one you must see in person to truly appreciate. The folk art eagle stamp, the historic moment in American history, and the beautiful watercolors all come together to make this an excellent rendition of patriotic art. Now ready — the defiant eagle watching Washington and his men. Collins #J5201 at $14.00.
