Kaleidoscope Fantasies
Unicorn
In European folklore, a unicorn was a legendary white horse with a long, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. During; the Middle Ag,es, it was described as a wild woodland creature, and before that it was depicted on ancient seals of the Indus Valley Civilization and was mentioned by the early Greeks in historical accounts. During the Renaissance in Europe, it was believed that the mythical creature's horn could heal sickness and that the unicorn could only be captured by a beautiful maiden.
This kaleidoscope fantasy cachet joins my previously announced mermaid and leprechaun covers, and I think that the set of four will become eagerly sought gems in the hobby. Don't miss out on them. My individually hand painted cachet features a wonderful rendition of the fabled unicorn. Nearby a maiden has attracted the elusive creature, but the unicorn is trotting away from her to safety. The colorful flowers coordinate nicely with the new stamp, and I must say this cover is destined to become a First Day Cover treasure.
In my entire history. I've never done a unicorn before and in all likelihood will never do one again. Like the other mythical creatures I'm featuring in this set of four, it's very popular with individuals around the world, and it has that link with ancient civilizations. It appears in the royal coats of arms of Scotland, the United Kingdom, and Nova Scotia. One was carved into the throne in Denmark, woven into tapestries, shown on 15th and 16± Century Scottish gold coins, and appeared in many paintings by famous artists. I'm pleased to offer this next
light-hearted and pleasing watercolor cachet in my Fantasy mini-series — the magical mythical, and elusive unicorn. Collins #L5103 at $14.00
