Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly

 

This distinctive butterfly has a large range in North America extending froth southern Canada to northern California-in-the West and to North Carolinain the_East. Its coloris a burnt orange with black markings. Variations of color run from yellowish-orange to reddish-brown. Its wingspan is about three inches.

My hand painted cachet shows one of the beautiful butterflies, and it is complemented by the one on the large, seventy-cent stamp. To add a bit of interest, I've included a red-winged blackbird in the background perched on cattail reeds.
