Maya Angelou

Memoirist, Popular Poet, and Civil Rights Activist

Collins Cover Announcement

Maya Angelou

This acclaimed author was born Marguerite Annie Johnson on April 4, 1928. An accomplished poet, she published seven autobiographies, the first of which was entitled I know Why the Caged Bird Sings. In it, she told of her life up to the age of 17, and it brought her international recognition. This superb work was so instrumental to her career and reputation that I decided to quote some of it on my hand painted cachet. Its visual impact as well as a wonderful watercolor portrait of Maya really make this a meaningful First Day Cover.

In addition to being a talented writer, Angelou was an actor, a director, a producer of plays, movies, and television programs, a journalist, and a Civil Rights activist. She was coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and recited her poem On the Pulse of Morning at President Bill Clinton's Inauguration.

This tribute cover for Maya Angelou is now ready. Collins #05401 at $15.00.
