Father Theodore Ted Hesburgh

President of Univ. of Notre Dame

Cover Announcement

The University of Notre Dame is well known for its long and legendary coliege football program. My individually hand painted cachet shows the most famous head coach of the "Fighting Irish" - Knute Rockne. He is sitting on a wooden bench with the University's famed Golden Dome in the background. Knute is wearing a green jersey and socks with a football at lower right This is a great cover that captures the essence of Notre Dame.

But...wait. When Father Ted became President of the Unirersity in 1951. he wanted to grow the institution in ways beyond its powerful football teams. During his tenure, the college became coeducational. For his involvement in ciric and goverment programs, commissions, and humanitarian projects, he received many honors such as the "United State's Presidential Medal of Freedom'' in 1964 and the ''Congressional Gold Medal" in 2000. He also holds the world record for the most honorary degrees with over 150.

When the Reverend Theodore Hesburgh ended his term as Notre Dame's president in 1981, he was credited with transforming the university mostly known for its "Fighting Irish" football teams to the top level of American Catholic colleges and a highly respected institution of higher education.

The new stamp shows an excellent portrait of Fr. Hesburgh, and it is postmarked with a first day of issue cancel from Notre Dame, Indiana. Father Ted is now ready. Collins # H5701 at $15.00.
