Dorothy Height - President of National Council of Negro Women

Dorothy Irene Height was born on March 24, 1912 in Richmond, Virginia. She was an educator and school administrator who was a stalwart Civil Rights activist and tireless Women's Rights proponent. Dorothy focused on the issues of African-American women including unemployment, illiteracy, and voter awareness. She served as president of the National Council of Negro Women for forty years.

My hand painted cachet shows a close-up portrait of Height with Martin Luther King speaking at the March on Washington. In his autobiography, James Farmer described her as one of the "Big Six" of the Civil Rights movement. Durning her career, Dorothy Height served as a consultant on African affairs to the Secretary of State; as a member of the President's Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped; and as an African-American voice on the President's Committee on the Status of Women.

ln 1994 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2004 she was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal. Her memoirs, "Open Wide the Freedom Gates," in which she named Mary Mcleod Bethune and Eleanor Roosevelt as the two women having the most influence on her life, were released in 2005.
