Transcontinential Railroad
150th Anniversary
Cover Announcement
Union Pacific Railroad --- Locomotive: No 119
Central Pacific Railroad - Locomotive: No. 60; Jupiter
These two historic steam locomotives met at Promontory Point in Utah on May 10, 1869 to celebrate the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. A ceremonial golden spike was used to signify the end of this monumental engineering project that tuly united America from sea to shining sea.
The Union Pacific had built the track from east to west starting in Omaha. The Cental Pacific built the track from west to east starting from Sacramento. My individually hand painted cachets depict the two famous engines that met and linked the East and West by rail. The Central Pacific's *Jupiter" and the Union Pacific's "119" both rode the tracks that day to fame and glory.
Both of the new stamps are large, ornate, and extremely attractive. Each is tied to its respective envelopes with a first day of issue bullseye postmark from Promontory Summit, Utah. And each cover has a detailed, watercolored Collins cachet that transforms the envelopes into miniature works of historic, railroad, western, and Americana art.
My two 150th Anniversary first day covers for the Transcontinental Railroad are now ready. Collins number
Q5801 Central Pacific Railroad - Locomotive "Jupiter." Collins number Q5802 Union Pacific Railroad - Locomotive "l19."
