Ruth was born in 1926 in Norwalk, California. Her parents were Japanese immigrants who operated a truck farm until the whole family, except for her father, was interned  during World War II.


Ruth became interested in art at an early age. She graduated from the internment center high school and went on to study at the Milwaukee State Teachers College. She could not get her degree because she was not allowed to get her teaching requiremenrs. Wisconsin awarded the degree in 1998.


Atter the war,l Ruth enrolled at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. She was influenced br many individuals and art forms, particularly the use of wire. In the 1960s, Asawa  received many commissions for large sculptures in San Francisco and other cities. Her work is featured in the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of America in New-York City. Fifteen of her wire sculptures are on pennanent display at the San Francisco's Young Museum at Golden State Park.
