19th Amendment

Suffrage Pioneers

Cover Announcement

The distinctive and important new stamp is postmarked on the first day of issue at Seneca Falls, New York. This town was the location of the 1848 first convention to be held for the sole purpose of discussing Women's Rights. The driving force for organizing and holding such an important event was Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was a founder and leader of the Women's Rights Movement in the United States. Her demand for Women's Right to vote was, in fact, controversial at the convention but quickly became a national central demand of the Women's Movement.

Susan B. Anthony was a was a Women's Rights activist and reformer who played a major role in the Women's Suffrage Movement. In 1851 she met Elizabeth Stanton who became her lifetime friend and a co-advocate and leader in the field of Women's Rights. In 1866 they initiated the American Equal Rights Association which campaigned for equal rights for both women and African Americans. In 1869 they co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association. In 1920 Congress ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution giving women the right to vote. It has become known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment.

Ida B Wells was a black journalist, educator, and early leader in the Civil Rights Movement. She was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Over her lifetime (1862-1931), she was dedicated to the fight for African American equality - especially Women's Right to Vote. It is a valid assumption that when the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, she must have been overjoyed that her work had contributed to that historic and just moment. During her lifetime, she had become the most famous black woman in America.

My individually hand painted cachet depicts all three of these prominent women who devoted their lives to Women's

Rights with special consideration for the right to vote. With three of our five children being daughters and ten of our fifteen grandchildren being granddaughters, Linda and I are so thankful for these three visionaries and the countless others whose efforts have contributed and continue to contribute to Women's Rights. Women's Vote is now available. Collins #X5901 at $16.50.
