CAPEX Chipmunk

Spring 2021 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 32 H102 CAPEX Wildlife — 6/10/78

H102e Moose (90 produced), H102f Chipmunk (61 produced), H1022g Raccoon (121 produced), H102h Fox (73 produced)

This is a four-cover lot featuring the four animals in the June 1978 CAPEX Wildlife set. This was only three months after my first cachet. Each of these four Collins CAPEX covers has the individual hand painted cachets that correspond to the individual stamps. Each cover has two of the mammal stamps that are tied to the cover with the circular first day of issue U.S. Postal Service CAPEX Station postmark in Toronto, Canada.

It should be noted that three of the four covers in this animal lot were produced in numbers of less than 100 and, in fact, only 61 exist with the postmark for the chipmunk. This major stamp show was held at the impressive Toronto Convention Center, but the new stamps were not placed on sale until noon. Confusion prevailed among postal personnel, and the result was an unintended differential in numbers produced. The bottom line is that varying limited numbers of these covers exist and they rarely come up for sale.
