CAPEX Wildlife from Canadian-Toronto, CA.
Summer 2025 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 3 H105 — (New) CAPEX Wildlife — Souvenir Sheet with Toronto Cancel — 6/10/78
This is very special Collins variety for the incredible set of CAPEX Wildlife covers. Only 25 were produced, and they have never been offered for sale to anyone. H105 is the same as H101 except the cancel is different from the H101 and all the other covers I produced for this issue.
When the doors of the Toronto Exposition and Convention Hall were opened at 10 AM on day of issue, it was total bedlam! The crowd was larger than expected, and everyone surged forward to get the new stamps and to have them serviced with the terrific cancels that were available.
As illustrated in my book on pages 22, 23, and 24, I obtained some great postmarks including the show cancel featuring the U.S. Star and Canadian maple leaf as well as the circular CAPEX postmark that was available. What does not appear in my book is this magnificent large CAPEX postmark with two thin killer bars that tie this spectacular souvenir sheet to the envelope, creating this new H105 variety.
Let me describe the extremely attractive souvenir sheet itself The plate number sheet has all eight of the Wildlife stamps which consist of a cardinal, mallard, Canada goose, blue jay, moose, chipmunk, red fox, and raccoon as well as a branch of Canadian maple leaves, and it is tied to the envelope with the large show cancel from CAPEX Station, Toronto, Canada. Keeping with the wildlife theme, the individually hand painted cachet shows a pair of mallards taking off from a Canadian lake. This is a superb, rare wildlife cover that does not appear in my book, making it very desirable to collectors. Making it even more desirable is the fact that only 25 covers were produced with the wonderful cancellation.
