This early female American aviation pioneer was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. She was the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. For this historic and courageous feat, she received the United States Distinguished Flying Cross.

This cover continues my Romantic Couples of the World series and shows Arnelia with her navigator Fred Noonan. Behind them is the Lockheed Model 10-E Electra aircraft in which they both disappeared on July 2, 1937. There had been sporadic accounts that they were romantically linked, and they were attempting an around-the-world flight when disaster struck and they crashed in the central Pacific near Howland Island. To this day, the exact location remains a mystery.

Earhart set many aviation records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in forming a national organization for female pilots. In 1935 she became a visiting faculty member at Purdue University and an advisor to the Aeronautical Engineering Department. She was also an eariy supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment.
