Collins Cover Anouncement
1920'S TRACTOR
(Transportation Series)
This COLLINS is another nice addition to the popular and extensive Transportation Series. It was off to Florida where I picked up the stamps in Sarasota as soon as the Post Office opened. The stamps on these covers were the first sold on the Day of Issue. Heading back to the Airport, we had a little time before the flight, so we settled down for "licking and sticking". Each cover has four of the regular 7.1 cent stamps PLUS one of the "Non-profit Organization" stamps with black imprint. Very few FDCs will exist with both these varieties. This, in fact, is a duo First Day Cover, and there will be fewer still with both varieties tied by a related unofficial (real) First Day cancellation. In fact, this COLLINS may be the only cover produced with both varieties on one FDC with unofficial. It's certainly a scarce item and well worth adding to your collection.
In the spring, the farmers of America turn their thoughts and efforts to the planting of their fields. Thus, what could be a more fitting cancel than "Springfield"? And, that's the fine related cancel obtained. Each cover has two postmarks from Springfield, New Jersey (the Garden State) tying the five stamps to the cover.
The hand-painted cachet is a large one showing a farmer from the 1920's sitting proudly on his vintage tractor. Behind him stretch his fields with a backdrop of barn, farm house and wooded hills.
All in all, this is a very nice collectible in the Transportation Series. Item #B1201 - $7.50.
